Leverkusen in the region
Leverkusen is directly by the Rhine. The connection between Cologne and Leverkusen is the A 1 motorway bridge across the Rhine. The two motorways, the A 1 from Saarbrücken to Hamburg, and the A 3 from Frankfurt to the Netherlands, make up the particular advantage of the position of Leverkusen: they intersect in the town at the so-called "Leverkusen Junction". Another motorway, the A 59, connects Leverkusen with Düsseldorf and the Cologne/Bonn Airport. Situated on the right-hand side of the Rhine, Leverkusen has an independent function in between the major cities of Düsseldorf and Cologne as a central venue for working, living, shopping and leisure-time activities. Every day, about 30,000 people commute from outside the city to their jobs in Leverkusen companies. And the roofed shopping zones in the city centre are increasingly binding the purchasing power of the people living in the commuter belt around Leverkusen. But Leverkusen also has attractive offers with regard to the quality of staying there and in the environs: parks in the city, cycling and walking routes through forests along the Dhünn, the banks of the Rhine and the embankment promenade in Hitdorf. The politics of the city are aimed at further extending the regional centrality of Leverkusen in the area on the right of the Rhine. But Leverkusen will still remain well-organised and transparent, because Leverkusen is one of the pioneers of a customer-orientated and unbureaucratic administration.
